Marininha, my first English student, came to visit us for a few minutes with her mom this morning.
Today we went to the notary public downtown Contagem (which the in Eldorado asked us to go to). We needed to get Evie's birth certificate recognized here as well, after the Consulate in Atlanta had issued it in Portuguese for us on our last visit (go figure). When we went to the Consulate in ATL, we hadn't had our marriage recognized in Brazil (we're basically married only in the USA). We had no clue we needed to do this and they needed a translation which would be too last minute and also more bureoucratic in the U.S. We decided to do it here, but it is hard to find information (everyone says something different on this kind of stuff).
At the Consulate in ATL, Paige's maiden name was used in Evie's Brazilian birth certificate because we hadn't had our marriage recognized in Brazil as I said.
We had to get Evie a passport and one person at the Consulate had stamped Paige and mine's American marriage certificate (notarizing it) so we could go to the next window and get her passport. We thought if we brought this American marraige certificate with and official seal from the Brazilian Consulate it would be enough to get the notary public in Contagem to recognize Evie's birth WITH Paige's new last name AND also recognize our marriage here. Nope, they needed a translation of it (which needs to be notarized by the OTHER notary public) and they need a NEWLY ISSUED version of Evie's birth certificate BY the CONSULATE in Atlanta (even thought they are notary publics) with Paige's new last name added in order to change it on the new birth certificate they'd create for Evie here.
Confusing? Brasil.
Anyways, we basically wasted a day driving around in the horrible and confusing Contagem traffic to find out nothing could be done. We came back to my mom's house to then start feeling sick...
Mateus (Sorry Mateus! We never took pics with you! We would post them if we could) came to visit us and we went to Lair's Restaurante Opção to eat churrasquinho and have a few drinks and talk. Mariana came with us and she was so sweet. Mariana's English is so good and she is much more outgoing than she used to be, so smart...
